What is the time sensitive network ? (-Part 1)

#TSN#

Time sensitive network (TSN) is a protocol standard that operates at the data link layer. Compared to industrial Ethernet, TSN continuously improves network real-time performance and goes further in being compatible with Ethernet and IP. Following the idea of industrial Ethernet, TSN has become a research hotspot in the industrial field, and some companies have successively launched controller and switch products that support TSN. TSN supports real-time data transmission and is fully backward compatible with Ethernet, which is a step forward in concept and design compared to industrial Ethernet. This is mainly reflected in the following two aspects.

#Ⅾata transmission#

1)    Under the same network deployment, achieve parallel real-time and non real-time data. In the OT subsystem, TSN support real-time and non-real time data transmission. Between OT and IT, TSN supports standard IT protocols without the need for additional gateways.

#Real-time performance#

1)    TSN has high real-time performance and can achieve microsecond level synchronization through clock synchronization and time aware shaper mechanism, meeting the requirements of demanding industrial control applications. And these standard mechanisms all belong to 802.1, maintaining compatibility with Ethernet. This is different from the hard real-time of industrial Ethernet, such as PROFINET IRT or Ether CAT high-speed transmission technology, which use customized ASIC chips and are not compatible with standard Ethernet.
